Virechana Treatments

Virechana Therapy – Ayurvedic Detox for Pitta Balance

Virechana is a specialized Panchakarma therapy designed to eliminate excess Pitta dosha and internal heat from the body through controlled purgation. It is not just a laxative treatment but a deep-cleansing process that removes toxins from the liver, intestines, and other vital organs, promoting overall health and rejuvenation. Unlike regular purgatives that only cleanse the large intestine, Virechana ensures complete detoxification by first drawing toxins into the digestive tract and then expelling them through induced bowel movements. It is considered a comprehensive treatment for Pitta disorders and a partial treatment for Kapha-related conditions.

Process of Virechana Therapy

1. Preparation Phase – Snehapana (Internal Oleation)
  • The patient consumes medicated ghee (clarified butter) for 5 to 7 days, customized based on their health condition.
  • Signs of effective oleation include smooth skin, improved digestion, and oily stools.
  • Snehapana can be done at home by mixing medicated ghee with tea, coffee, or milk without interfering with daily routines.
2. External Oleation & Sudation (Snehana & Swedana)
  • A full-body massage (Abhyanga) with medicated oil and steam therapy (Swedana) are performed daily.
  • This process helps loosen toxins and bind them to the medicated ghee for effective elimination.
3. Virechana Day – Purgation Therapy
  • On the 6th day, Snehapana is discontinued, and the patient is given a specialized diet (Utkleshaka Ahara) to prepare for purgation.
  • On the 7th day, a specific purgation medicine is administered based on the patient’s body strength (Rugna Bala) and disease severity (Roga Bala).
  • The patient experiences 8 to 10 bowel movements, leading to deep detoxification without weakness, dehydration, or infection.
  • Unlike common diarrhea, Virechana leaves the patient feeling energetic, light, and refreshed.
